-
I began my career in college advising in 1995 at Ingraham High School where I spent
five years helping students create and implement their post-secondary educational plans.
-
In
2000, Chief Sealth High School hired me to create a College and Career Center that would become the focus for the school's transformation plan.
-
Working together with teachers and staff, I helped all of the students develop an educational plan which included going to college right out of high school.
-
Some of the activities I led included;
-
developed strong relationships with colleges and admissions officers;
-
brought representatives from colleges all over the country to talk directly to students;
-
presented interactive college admissions workshops to every class in ninth through twelfth grades;
-
organized an innovative campus visitation plan for the entire junior class;
-
helped students explore college possibilities and find their right fit;
-
published a comprehensive scholarship bulletin every three weeks;
-
brought in outside resources such as Northwest Education Loan Association (NELA)
to help all seniors apply for financial aid
-
Within two years, the percentage of seniors accepted and enrolled into
four-year colleges rose 40 percent. In 2004, I became an independent college advisor.
-
In 2005 I began volunteering at Highline High School in its new Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, which supports students who are the first in their families to attend college. I am no longer involved in
this program but continue to volunteer with local organizations regarding college advising.
-
I follow the frequent changes in college admissions requirements by attending conferences, workshops, and professional meetings throughout the U.S.. I also visit with college representatives and tour many college campuses
throughout the year.
