-
I began my career in college advising in 1993 at Ingraham High School where I spent six years helping students create and implement their post-secondary educational plans.
-
In 1999 Chief Sealth High School hired me to create a College and Career Center that would become a central focus for the school's transformation plan and was the heart of the school.
-
Working together with teachers and staff, I helped all of the students develop an educational plan which included going to college right out of high school.
-
Some of the activities I led included;
-
developing strong relationships with colleges and admissions officers,
-
bringing representatives from colleges all over the country to talk directly to students,
-
presenting interactive college admissions workshops to every class in ninth through twelfth grades,
-
organizing an innovative campus visitation plan for the entire junior class,
-
helping students explore college possibilities and find their right fit,
-
publishing a comprehensive scholarship bulletin every three weeks,
-
bringing in outside resources such as NELA to help all seniors apply for financial aid.
-
Within two years, the percentage of seniors accepted and enrolling into four-year colleges rose 40%. I left Chief Sealth after five years to become an independent college advisor.
-
In 2005, I began volunteering at Highline High School with their new AVID
program, a program targeting students who will be the first in their families
to attend college. Even though I am no longer involved in this specific program, I continue to volunteer with local organizations
regarding college advising.
-
I keep current with all of the changes on college admissions by attending
numerous conferences, workshops, and professional meetings. I also visit
with college representatives and tour many college campuses throughout the
year.
Utilizing the skills I developed while working with students in the schools,
I independently provide individualized college advising for
students and families.
